Coming from Izumo, Japan, Natsu is a female disciple from the demon-fighting Fu-Ma clan. While some of her fellow ninjas have attacked her, fearing the demon Arahabaki lurking inside her, her master, Taki (who is very much alive) has always protected and supported her. Taki caused her worry after failing to return from a trip outside the village, and when Leixia appeared at the gates, unafraid of her demon nature, Natsu offered to serve as her bodyguard on the road ahead. By joining Leixia, she hopes to locate her missing master. A very fast fighter, her moves are generally based off Taki's. She fights with two ninja swords, Kuzukiri and Awayuki, in the Musoh-Battoh-Ryu style.
Defeated in battle with Soul Calibur, the Soul Edge's shattered fragments passed through a rift that scattered them to the far reaches of the world. The cursed sword's minions, the malfested, sought out the pieces and reassembled the weapon as best as possible. Using a spare body it had stored beneath Ostrheinsburg, Soul Edge was reborn through Dumas. The host worked its way into the inner circle of Emperor Rudolf II of the Holy Roman Empire, quickly winning his royal favor and gaining dominion over Hungary, currently engaged in war with the Ottoman Empire. Dumas began a widespread hunt of the malfested, using the mission as a cover for his true goals: to collect the missing fragments of Soul Edge and harvest human souls. Nightmare fights with Soul Edge in a style inherent to his armor.

The main protagonist of Soulcalibur V, Patroklos is the son of Sophitia and Rothion, and he is the nephew of Cassandra. He wields a holy sword and shield and fights in an Athenian style.
The game's secondary protagonist, Pyrrha shares the same familial background as her brother and wields her mother's sword and shield, The Omega Sword and Elk Shield, which were crafted by her father. Kidnapped at a young age, she is unaware of her family ties.
A native of Rouen in the French Empire, Raphael (who's found himself a hat) experienced a devastating betrayal at the same time that his home country suffered the blows of war. He found comfort in Amy, his foster daughter, but after waking up in a prison cell with no recollection of the time that had passed or the wrongdoing he committed, he broke free in search of her. Raphael wields a rapier called Flambert and fights in the La Rapière des Sorel style.
Appearances: SC2, SC3, SC4, BD, SC5
A handler of Soul Calibur, Siegfried successfully destroyed Soul Edge for a time. The knight returned to the Holy Roman Empire to rest, but the malfested continued to grow in number and strength. In retaliation, he recruited his allies and reformed his old mercenary group, Schwarzwind. After more than a decade, Siegfried witnessed Soul Calibur's transformation into a new one-handed sword, a harbinger of Soul Edge's return. The changed Soul Calibur meant that a new champion must be selected, and Siegfried assigned the duty to Z.W.E.I., a wandering swordsman and member of the Schwarzwind. Siegfried fights in the Original Style.
Appearances: SB, SC, SC3, SL, SC4, BD, SC5
Infatuated with Soul Edge's power, Tira was distraught when the evil sword was defeated seventeen years earlier. She dedicated her efforts to reuniting the scattered pieces of the blade, all the while turning her attention to Sophitia's daughter, Pyrrha. After years of waiting, the reborn Azure Knight, Nightmare, failed to meet her high expectations, so she decided to prepare herself—dual personalities and all—as a more appropriate vessel for Soul Edge. Tira uses a Ring Blade called Eiserne Drossel and fights in the Dance of Death style.
Appearances: SC3, SC4, BD, SC5
Xiba grew up in the Ming Empire on Zhen Hang Mountain. On a journey to inherit the Kali-Yuga from Kilik, he travels in the company of Maxi, designated the boy's guardian by Edge Master; Leixia, seeking answers about her blue-stoned pendant (Kilik's own necklace); and Natsu, Leixia's friend and bodyguard. Xiba fights with a rod called Three Karmas and follows the Secret arts of the Ling-Sheng Su Style Rod and Kong Style Rod. Coincidentally, Xiba's style resembles early designs for Kilik, who remains unconfirmed for SCV.
A fortune-teller by occupation, Viola refuses to tell false predictions to please her patrons, her moral position often inciting resentment and hatred wherever she goes. Because of this treatment, she moves from place to place, wondering about her own purpose, as she is unable to peer into her own soul. Without memories of her past, Viola finds emphasizing with others difficult—except for when she's around Z.W.E.I. Considering themselves kindred spirits, they travel as a pair. Viola's weapon is an orb called Quattuor Orbis, and she adheres to the Ars planetarum fighting style.
Hailing from Palermo in the Kingdom of Naples, the blind and mute Voldo faithfully served his master, the affluent Italian merchant Vercci, until his death, but his loyalty was an illusion fashioned by the accursed Soul Edge. A blow from Kilik's Kali-Yuga staff cleared his mind of the deception, but Voldo kept to his duties, returning this time to the Money Pit—an underground chamber where Vercci had secured his fortune. Finding the storehouse empty, Voldo used his supernaturally keen sense of smell to track and kill the culprits, restoring the treasure to its rightful place. Now Voldo searches for what he believes to be his true master: Soul Edge. He battles with Twin Jamadhar, Manas and Ayus, in the Original Style.

From Mt. Fuji in Japan, Yoshimitsu is the closest disciple of the Yoshimitsu sword's former owner. All those who possess the blade must too be known by its name, a title earned by striking down the previous holder. As the elder Yoshimitsu sealed his power within the sword, the young warrior defeated him and claimed the weapon as his own. The demonic katana contains the same dark energy that exists in Soul Edge. Yoshimitsu, continuing the mission of his late master, led the presently deceased Manji Clan and now belongs to the bandit gang Manjitou. He's versed in the arts of Manji Ninjitsu.
Appearances: SC, SC2, SC3, SC4, BD, SC5
The swordsman and werewolf earned himself a fugitive status for interfering with Graf Dumas' crusade against the malfested, secretly a witch hunt that's caused the execution of countless innocents. Soon Z.W.E.I. met and rescued Viola, and together they traveled under the protection of Siegfried. Thankful for the knight's help, Z.W.E.I. agreed to choose a worthy successor for Soul Calibur. Z.W.E.I. is master of the sword Kreuzgriff and is self-taught in combat. Producer Hisaharu Tago described him as having a very unique fighting style, but denied that he is a stance-fighter.
