Rumor: Wii Memory Storage Solution to be Holographic?

“So you’ve come…”

The shortage of memory in the Wii is no well kept secret, and nor is Nintendo’s constant reassurance that they are looking at ways to deal with it. Of course, people have often looked at the usual suspects when it comes to how, be it more flash memory, or an external hard drive. But did anyone expect that they might try to make it… holographic?

“In compliance with 37 C.F.R. .sctn.1.71(g) (1), disclosure is herein made that the claimed invention was made pursuant to a Joint Research Agreement as defined in 35 U.S.C. 103 (c) (3), that was in effect on or before the date the claimed invention was made, and as a result of activities undertaken within the scope of the Joint Research Agreement, by or on the behalf of Nintendo Co., Ltd. and InPhase Technologies, Inc.” —Nintendo Everything

According to Nintendo Everything, the patent was filed a few months ago, so it’s difficult to tell where it may stand in Nintendo’s broader vision, if anywhere. Unfortunately, however, file info wasn’t provided, making it a little more difficult to check against the patent database, but you can read up on the concept of holographic memory here.
