Opinion: Top 5 The Legend of Zelda games

What are the Hero of Hyrule's best adventures?

Honorable Mention: Majora’s Mask

Opinion: Top 5 The Legend of Zelda games

With Majora’s Mask being reserved for my honorable mention, you can probably already guess at least one of my choices for top five. I wanted to speak briefly about this game, as I had a tough time leaving it out of my list. Majora’s Mask has absolutely no business being as good as it is. It was turned around by a small team of developers in a little over a year, which is stunning considering the long development cycles games continue to go through. My main reason for leaving it off the list is also the reason I love the game so much: it’s unlike any Zelda game that preceded or succeeded it. Due to a need to decrease the size of the game in order to release it on time, the developers came up with the unique gameplay hook of a repetitive 3 day cycle. Whilst the design of the game was a byproduct of the developers’ needs, it feels very much intentional and is a testament to the strong narrative of Majora’s Mask.

Set in Termina, the Upside Down version of Hyrule if you will, Link must retrieve a mask containing an ancient evil spirit within three days before the moon comes crashing down destroying the world. In the game, Link has the power to rewind time, meaning that he is reliving and the gamer is replaying the same three days over and over again. This system allows for some of the most unique puzzles in the game series, but proves to be not quite as accessible as its predecessor Ocarina of Time. For some Zelda fans it’ll be their favorite in the series, but it could be quite alienating for a newcomer. As such, I have decided to leave it out of my top five.
