New Downloadable Game from Double Fine, Costume Quest, Revealed

While they have yet to find much sales success, developer Double Fine, headed up by Tim Schafer, has quickly become one of the industry’s most beloved developers thanks to offbeat titles like Psychonauts and Brutal Legend. Now, he’s back with a new downloadable adventure set to be released by THQ, Costume Quest.

While one would think that Costume Quest would be the twisted brainchild of Schafer himself, it’s not: The game’s designer is actually Tasha Harris, Double Fine’s lead animator. Even so, the game has the developer’s unique look and feel, and could turn out to be one of the year’s best downloadable games.

Interestingly enough, the game is being published under THQ’s KFC (that’s Kids, Family, Casual – not that delicious chicken) banner, and will be far lighter in tone than the hilariously dark Psychonauts and the violently obscene Brutal Legend. Taking place on Halloween night, players take the role of trick-or-treaters looking to grab candy, points, and complete tasks. However, that’s just half of the action, as the game then moves to Combat Mode, where players transform into real-life versions of their costumes, complete with weapons and powers, and must battle the forces of evil in different gameplay arenas.

Despite Schafer’s lack of involvement in the project, it’s easy to see that the game goes back to the roots of his career and adventure RPG gameplay. The game is in an isometric format, and the art style evokes Schafer’s classic work. In short, this game is looking like a real treat – or trick, if you prefer.

And the best part? We don’t have long of a wait to play it, as the title is set to hit the Xbox Live Arcade and PSN this October, just in time for All Hallow’s Eve. Hit up 1up.com for the first screens and more details on the game.
