Mega Man Universe Trailer Reveals Gameplay, Characters, Not Much More

Earlier this year, Capcom revealed a downloadable title featuring everyone’s favorite blue bomber in Mega Man Universe, but didn’t reveal much more outside of a sweet nostalgia-filled trailer that confirmed appearances by other Capcom legends. And that was about it. We speculated that Capcom would wait to showcase more details at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show, but nay, the Penny Arcade Expo is featuring the game playable for the first time, and Capcom has shown of a few new gameplay trailers to boot.

The above video is a compilation of the trailers given to various sites, revealing that the game will utilize Mega Man’s signature 2D gameplay with 3D sprites, in a style reminiscent of 2006’s PSP title Mega Man: Powered Up. Megs himself will be playable of course, along with his incarnation from the incredibly awful US boxart for the original NES release of Mega Man (referred to as “Bad Boxart Mega Man” – no joke) and Street Fighter’s Ryu. One would assume that Ghouls and Ghosts’ Arthur, revealed in the first trailer, will be playable as well.

And that’s about all we can garner through the trailer initially, requiring some reading between the lines.

Perhaps the most telltale hint is blocks spelling out Mega Man’s name, thus hinting at a heavy level of customization for the game. Such an idea was previously used in the aforementioned Powered Up to great effect, so seeing a bigger level of customization, perhaps incorporation more series bosses and level-sharing abilities, would certainly be an awesome idea.

Also, it looks like the game will have another enhancement over Powered Up, that being aspects from Mega Man 2. Air Man, Wood Man, and Crash Man’s levels can clearly be discerned in the trailer, meaning some heavy influence from the greatest Mega Man game ever is in the works.

Without a doubt, Mega Man Universe has climbed up the list to become one of the most anticipated downloadable games right now. Capcom still hasn’t shared any details on a release or pricing, only that it will be for XBLA and PSN – and when the details come, they will be shared.
