Is Gran Turismo Being "Snubbed" by the Guiness Book of World Records?

Is Sony's Gran Turismo being snubbed by the Guiness Book of World Records? Fans at GT Planet certainly seem to think so, as the publication's annual "Gamer's Edition" seems to be moving away from the measured facts and figures of word records and into more objectionable material-- the kind which you are just as likely to find on nearly any video game blog, website, or magazine out there. In this specific instance, the book is now gauging what it believes are "The Top 50 Console Games of All Time." Gran Turismo makes the list at #19, behind some rather considerable heavyweights, including Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the Mario Kart series (as a whole), Grand Theft Auto, Street Fighter II, and more. Granted, it's difficult to imagine that Mario Kart would have the top spot, as these were said to be ranked by their "initial impact and lasting legacy." But GT Planet says:
Unfortunately for Kazunori Yamauchi, the panel did not consider achievements outside of the video game industry "important". Otherwise, a game which has sold more than 50 million copies, been referred to as the ultimate automotive "brand ambassador" by BusinessWeek magazine, pushed technical boundaries, increased sales of actual vehicles, turned a video gamer into a professional race car driver, and developed real and concept cars would - at the very least - manage into the "top 10″. But, no, when the competition inspired…other games, such real-world accomplishments just aren't enough.
I realize that this is an argument coming from an obviously impassioned fan, but at the same time, it hardly strikes me as invalid, and even makes me wonder if Gran Turismo should be given a higher ranking. Speaking of which, the list is as follows:
1. Super Mario Kart (series) 2. Tetris 3. Grand Theft Auto 4. Super Mario World 5. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 6. Halo 7. Resident Evil IV 8. Final Fantasy XII 9. Street Fighter II 10. GoldenEye 11. Super Mario 64 12. Tomb Raider 13. Metal Gear Solid 14. Call of Duty 4 15. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 16. GTA San Andreas 17. Super Mario Bros 18. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 19. Gran Turismo 20. Final Fantasy VII 21. Pro Evolution Soccer 4 22. The Orange Box 23. Lego Star Wars Complete Saga 24. Tekken 2 25. Wii Sports 26. Pokemon Red/Blue 27. Guitar Hero 28. Project Gotham Racing 4 29. Super Mario Galaxy 30. Resident Evil 31. Ico 32. Chrono Trigger 33. Gunstar Heroes 34. Soul Calibur 35. Advance Wars 36. Ridge Racer 37. Super Metroid 38. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night 39. GTA Vice City 40. BioShock 41. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 42. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening 43. God of War 44. Sega Rally Championship 45. Starfox 64 46. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion 47. WarioWare Inc 48. Saturn Bomberman 49. Crash Bandicoot 50. Outrun 2
According to Craig Glenday, Editor in Chief for Guinness World Records, "We knew this would be a complex task so we invited a crack team of industry experts to form a judging panel - and the result is a 'top 50′ list of games ranked both on their importance and on how fun they are to play." So, what do you think? Is Gran Turismo ranked appropriately, or should its real-world accomplishments lend itself enough pull to garner a higher spot? Are there any other choices on the list with which you don't agree? Tell us your thoughts in the comments.
