Final Fantasy XI Ultimate Collection Announced

Square Enix will be releasing the Final Fantasy XI collection to end all Final Fantasy XI collections this holiday. If you haven’t jumped on the wagon yet, doing so less than a year before the launch of the next online Final Fantasy will at least get you the best value.

“The Ultimate Collection” will be released on November 10th for the PC and Xbox 360 and will include every piece of Final Fantasy XI content ever released all for $20. That’s the four previously collected expansion packs, two expansions released earlier this year, and an all new “Shantotto Ascension” expansion – a game and seven expansion packs for $20.

That price is of course not including the fee for playing online which is $13 a month after the 30-day trial that comes with buying this collection.

“The Ultimate Collection” should be the final of four Final Fantasy XI collections. The previous three collections shared the name “Vana’diel Collection.” The first released in 2005 included the first two expansion packs Rise of the Zilart and Chains of Promathia. The second called Vana’diel Collection 2007 included those two packs along with Treasures of Aht Urhgan. VAna’diel Collection 2008 added Wings of the Goddess.

$20 is a surprisingly low price for what is supposedly the final edition of Final Fantasy XI considering what the game originally launched at. For those that don’t remember, the PS2 version in 2003 had to ship with a PS2 hard drive that put the price over $100. Making that price feel even more expensive was how almost no other PS2 games made use of the hard drive.
