Data East Arcade Classics: What Took Them So Long?

From Atari to Midway, and from Capcom to SEGA, it seems as though very nearly everyone has gotten into the business of releasing compilations of their classic games over the past couple of generations. But with a catalog that consists of Burgertime, Joe & Mac, and the often-meme’d Bad Dudes vs. Dragon Ninja, one might wonder what has taken so long for a Data East collection to finally materialize.

“Granted, Data East doesn’t exist anymore, but someone has to own the rights to such classic games” said The Kartel in their recent article, wherein they delve into the mystery of why we are only now seeing these works re-released in Data East Arcade Classics for the Wii. “There’s pretty good reason why Data East games haven’t been relaunched on consoles til now, as I found out after following up with some friends in the industry.”
