Where / When In The World is The Next Assassin’s Creed?

EmpireStateGamer put up a picture from an Ubisoft survey asking fans where the next Assassin’s Creed game should take place.  While there is still not a definite answer, the survey DOES allow us to know that it will take place in one of these eight locations.  Since Ubisoft did confirm that a new Assassin’s Creed title WILL be released in 2012, we have these historical areas to look forward too:

  • The violent conflicts of the Imperial Dynasties in Medieval China
  • The advent of the mighty British Empire during Victorian England
  • The culmination of the Pharaoh Reign in Ancient Egypt
  • The invasion of the Americas by the Spanish Conquistadors
  • The confrontation between British colonists and native Americans during The American Revolution of the XVIII century
  • The overthrow of the Tsar Empire by the Communists during the Russian Revolution
  • The Warlord Battles in Feudal Japan
  • The rise of Caesar's Empire in Ancient Rome

This list is all over the place. Here are my questions.  How much further in the past / future are we going?  In Revelations, Constantinople has fallen already.  The fall of Constantinople by the Mehmed II occurred in 1453.  This gives us an idea of when Ezio is in the city.

Many of time periods on this list are far before the year 1453.  Could the next installment of Assassin’s Creed take place even before the original game?  This list says yes.  Ubisoft has already confirmed that Ezio’s adventures end with Revelations and that the next title will star a new character.  I always just assumed that the stories would take place after each other.  This list gives hint that Ubisoft is willing to take a more ancient approach to the series.

I’d like to look at this list again, broken down into two categories based off of time periods: Before (1453), and After (1453).

Before:

  • The culmination of the Pharaoh Reign in Ancient Egypt
  • The rise of Caesar's Empire in Ancient Rome
  • The violent conflicts of the Imperial Dynasties in Medieval China (split with ‘after’)
  • The Warlord Battles in Feudal Japan (split with ‘after’)

The concept of being an assassin running on rooftops in medieval China or Feudal Japan instantly puts the image of ninjas in my head (I realize that is historically incorrect, but it still happens in my mind).  This would be a very different direction for Ubisoft.  While the environment would be very different, I definitely like the idea.  I could see people objecting due to how alien it would be from what they are used too, but I think people would come around.  I feel there is a lot to be done in either of these scenarios though – I mean a lot.  I’d be VERY curious to see what Ubisoft would do with this.

While the Rise of Caesar’s Rome would be a fun scenario for the AC series, I feel like Rome has already been exhausted for the series.  With Brotherhood already taking place in the city, yes – hundreds of years later, I feel like something even more different would be better.

Of all the choices, Egypt makes the most sense to me.  The cities in the past AC games have not been far from Egypt, so story-wise Thebes, Alexandria, or Cairo make sense.  At the same time, the “Pharaoh Reign in Ancient Egypt” is a VERY broad category taking place over thousands of years.  Again, I would like to see what Ubisoft would do with this.

After:

  • The advent of the mighty British Empire during Victorian England
  • The invasion of the Americas by the Spanish Conquistadors
  • The confrontation between British colonists and native Americans during The American Revolution of the XVIII century
  • The overthrow of the Tsar Empire by the Communists during the Russian Revolution

Number 2 for which make the most sense to me would be Victorian London.  Again, England isn’t too far from the cities in previous games.  This would be a fun period to run around on roof tops.  The reason I put it as 2 and not 1 is due to how much of a jump in the future it would be.  An assassin with British charm could throw people off.

I cannot see the invasion of the Americas by the Spanish Conquistadors as an Assassin’s Creed game.  Where would the hero fit in?  Would you BE a conquistador?  Would you be a Native American?  An Aztec?  Or would the game just take place during this period?  This one confuses me.

The last two seem reasonable since they both deal with revolutionary periods.  Once again I’m not certain who you would play as, but the time periods are awesome.  They seem a bit too far in the future, especially the Russian Revolution.  Playing as a minute man or even a communist could be interesting.
