When Markus "Notch" Persson first announced the Endermen he described them as "possibly too creepy." From their descriptions of dark, with "long and narrow limbs," and "very slow" movement, everything about them sounded creepy. Then Notch described their movement and actions. "As long as you look straight at them, they stand perfectly still and look straight at you. As soon as you look away, they will run (very fast) towards you. Plus, to close long distances, they can teleport."

In theory, they sound both awesome and scary. In gameplay, the Endermen don't live up to the hype.

I booted up my freshly updated Minecraft to get a first glimpse of those tall, dark and ugly looking Enderman, to see if they're really as creepy as they were described. Check out my first encounter with the newest monster to enter Minecraft.

Well, turns out...not that scary. DERP.

Maybe I should blame the fake "leaked" fanmade film for all of the hype and my high expectations for the Endermen. Everything about them in that fanmade film was scary. From their movement to their sound effects, to the final death of the character as he desperately attempted to escape. The Endermen in THAT video was what I wanted. Instead, what I got was an encounter with a clunky enemy that didn't act nearly as scary as advertised.

Technically, Minecraft is still in beta so I can't blame much of my disappointment on the buggy-ness of their actions, but either way, the zombie-like grunts and clunky movement are not exactly spine tingling. And their movement and teleporting aren't as intimidating or defined as Notch made them out to be. They would teleport towards me even if I was looking right at them!

The concept of the Endermen was cool, but the execution? Not so much.
