Heavy Rain Sells a Million

Heavy Rain was a title that received mixed reviews across the hardcore spectrum. Some liked that it tried to do something different. Others disliked it for its somewhat clumsy execution of that something different. Regardless of whether your were in the yay or nay category Heavy Rain has done pretty well for itself. Quantic Dream's narrative opus recently broke the 1 million sales mark, and according to co-founder David Cage, the sky is likely the limit.
"We have sold more than one million copies of Heavy Rain worldwide," said Cage in an interview with Play3.de. "That was a surprise to many, since estimated sales were between 200,000 to 300,000 units. We estimate that by the end of the year, we will have sold 1.5 million copies and are very pleased with the reception." One million in sales may not seem like a ton when compared to recent mass sellers like Modern Warfare 2, but for a game like Heavy Rain where the predicted total sales were markedly lower, such success is notable. If nothing else, it demonstrates that there is a willingness amongst hardcore gamers to try something new and different. One can only hope, regardless of personal opinions considering how successfully Quantic Dream actually was with Heavy Rain, that other developers and publishers will take this a sign that creativity and the willingness to use it can be worthwhile.
