To Be or Not To Be: Online Game Play Rushed
Editorial By: Telka
For the past few months, gamers and fan sites alike dueled with words via forums and chat rooms, expressing their lack of patience for Microsoft’s decision to enable broadband services in the spring of 2002 rather than launch. This plan resulted in denying titles like Halo and THPS from being online compatible to a mainstream crowd. Even from Ground Zero (the sales floor), I heard comments such as, “I won’t bother to buy it until it goes online.†- Or “By time they go online I may as well have just went with a Playstation 2.â€
It was at times like these I stand back and smile, giving the occasional shrug. I found that when people are uncertain of plans - because they are “not in the know†- they make up the most brutish sounding ‘commitment’. It’s this deficiency of tolerance that either does one of two things: Either the person will remedy the situation or sit back and keep complaining endlessly to anyone that will listen. I can’t say I have seen many do the first of the two options.
Over at Gamespy and Xbox Gateway however, they have taken the initiative to soothe some impatient gamers and introduce a clever way to take advantage of the multiplayer features in selected Xbox titles. What I’d like to know though, is it worth it?
Now, I’m not stupid when it comes to computers, nor am I a guru. Frankly put though; there are tons of people who have no idea what half of computer geeks talk about. If you read through the instructions at either site, you’re going to have a brain hemorrhage just going through all the steps. Both have applications to run, networks to manage, and hell… if you don’t have a hub, you may have to visit your local electronic store for a solution. If you’re underage and jobless, mom might be pissed that she has to buy you one more thing.
Wait… more money, extra equipment, hooking it up to my PC, and then only finding a few people to gang up against because I might lag worse than a grunt shot in the hump? Isn’t this what Microsoft might be wanting to avoid?
Oh yes, I forgot, it’s free. And I’m sure plenty of you out there are thinking about the whole “Microsoft might charge and I’m going cry about it and play this way to keep them from having more money…†thing. I know - I’ve heard people nag about that too. I find this most amusing when MS has not even issued an actual price; much less release the details of how exactly it’s going to work. We all know what they say about assuming… correct? Anyways, you can’t tell me that you can’t put down that fast food for a few days out of the month, or maybe cut down on a carton of cigarettes if you want to online game THAT bad.
I’m not completely knocking the efforts of my fellow gamers. Actually, I think it’s cool that the drive is there to do something productive. I give them credit. I wouldn’t have been able to devise the system. For all the people who love it, I’m glad you think you’re happy.
For me though, this is not what online gaming is about with the Xbox. I’ll wait till the spring - I’m enduring. I’ll hook it up with no problems and then I’ll pay a little extra for the pleasure of TELLING your punk arse (and more than -3- others) to get the hell out of my way.
That, to me, is worth waiting for.
When she’s not writing editorials to piss people off, she’s either online or gaming. Currently tackling: Halo, GTA3, Harvest Moon: Save the Homelands, and Frequency.
