OriginalsTiger Woods PGA Tour 2003
Ever experience Golf at it’s finest? This time I’m not talking about real life golf. I’m talking about golf in the videogame world. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2003 brings the grace of golf and the best golfers ever to swing a club in the finest golf game to ever grace the Xbox with its presence. It’s not the fact that Tiger Woods himself graces the game with his presence. It’s the fact that the Xbox has finally received a real golf game courtesy of EA Sports. What is really disappointing is that it took a year to get a solid title worthy of recognition. While Outlaw Golf has been the only golf game up until this point, Simon and Schuster went for the humorous and cartoon approach. EA Sports, like everyone knows, goes for the realistic approach and this time around they hit the green. Features: • A wide range of golfers and courses ranging from 12 original characters to pro golfers as well as 9 PGA Tour courses and 3 fantasy courses • New precision control system lets you take your golf game to the max • Create your own golfers and courses • Test your skill in the SkillZone minigames • A wide variety of 10 different game modes good enough to keep you busy until the next Tiger game is released • Earning cash allows you to buy outfits and attributes • All new worldwide leaderboard allows you to check your ranking online and compare with other gamers all around • New EA Sports TRAX features singles from bands such as Saliva, Paul Oakenfold, Ash, and more Gameplay: The sport of golf on console systems has evolved throughout the years. This year, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2003 offers a rare combination of realism with somewhat of an arcade experience along to offer a strong, good looking package. What EA Sports has presented us with is a well balanced golf title with a strong backbone of excellent gameplay deep enough to make us enjoy the game for months ahead. One of the better changes done to this title is the better designed control scheme. Lots of controls have been laid down to rest forever while new controls have appeared giving gamers the absolute dynamic controls to make sure they can get their game right while playing Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2003. The best change yet is the precision analog control which allows you to put the fate of your shot into your hands. There is no meter for shots anywhere within this game. What you are left with is your own judgment, and what you’re going to need is a complete sense of the game. Let’s just hope you know how to calculate your shots to perfection. What is really impressive is the lush amount of game modes available. In total there are ten different game modes which are the following: • Tiger Challenge • Scenarios • Stroke Play • Match Play • Skins • Tournament • Online Events • Practice • Speed Golf • SkillZone The Tiger Challenge allows you to compete in match games, scenarios, skins, and tournaments against amateurs and pros. Along the way you can unlock more golfers and Tour Cards if you achieve a winning habit. As you move up in the rankings, you can unlocks a hole of Tiger’s ‘Dream 18’. Scenarios will have you and your chosen golfer put into a difficult position on the golf course and your objective is to see how well you can get yourself out of it without digging yourself a deeper hole. By completing scenarios and either winning a gold, silver, or bronze award, you’ll receive money to spend on more attributes on your golfer. Strokes play is the most basic round of golf that is available. This mode is perfect for multiplayer matches when you and three other friends think you all ‘own’ each other. Take it to the course and find out. Match play is just as similar as strokes play. The only difference is that you face off head to head with an opponent.Online events are where you can really bust out and show your ‘mad skills’ to the world. By playing under tournament conditions, you do what you can to make sure your score is good enough to make a strong impact. Then you can log onto the official EA Sports website and report your score. SkillZone is where you’ll be able to find some enjoyable minigames when you’ve decided to take a break from the real game. Games like Target, Capture, and Tiger will have you have you busy attempting to complete these crazy minigames. The other area where the game really shines is the My Tour area which allows you to create your own custom course and even add it to the Tour for further play. Whatever you could have possibly thought, EA Sports has already beaten you to the game. Is there a complete range of fun activities to play in this title? Of course there is! You’ll be having fun for hours going through everything. Graphics: The ballots have been counted and the verdict is in. By an overwhelming response, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2003 is taking home the award for being the most graphically advanced game up to date. There is simply no competition when you compare other golf titles (zero competition) to Tiger Woods 2003. EA Sports in every possible way has made this game a wonderful masterpiece to look at. Tiger Woods alone looks so good that if you would have gold fan stand from a distance, that person wouldn’t have any clue that you were playing a videogame that had Tiger Woods in it. From his face down to his shoes, Tiger is completely well represented with his favorite Nike apparel and golf equipment. Animation has been done well to an impressive extent. Tiger looks fabulous wiping sweat from his forehead to tipping his hat to the crowd after a great put. What really succeeds in astonishing everyone are the captured motions during golf swings. The game goes into a cut scene where the golfer and screen go into a fancy show. Golf courses are well done. From the official course to the fantasy courses and even to the created courses, everything is full of lush, gorgeous detail. From sunsets, to bright afternoons, to dark stormy days, everything is designed to impress. Sound: While the game altogether runs and performs very smoothly, the audio is well worked into the game. Commentators give you the inside deal of what your current situation is, have conversations between each other, and give you the low down on the match. On big drives or putts, they to can get really excited and you can certainly tell with the emotion there giving in there commentary. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2003 features numerous groups such as Saliva, Paul Oakenfold, Ash, and the 12 Stones performing singles in the background. While it livens up the game, it’s still not the best selection for this title (why the heck does Saliva also have their music featured in videogames?). Replay Value: EA Sports has made sure that they’ve put enough effort and contents into their first gold title on the Xbox to keep you busy and fully entertainment. In my opinion, they have really grabbed the bull by the horns and given us gamers a true golf experience. Golf gamers will truly love and cherish this game, for what it holds is a total new dimension. Overall: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2003 is yet another solid effort by EA Sports to bring a real life sport into real life action on consoles. Tiger Woods 2003 is no exception. EA Sports has impressively been added new dimensions that will change the sports genre in videogames forever. The newest addition of the precision control is a perfect example of what EA Sports is doing to sports titles. Tiger Woods 2003 is the complete package worthy of any sports fans attention. You should go catch a ‘Caddy’ before this title is sent on a line drive. --Chris Banovic
