Many FPS titles have been released on the Xbox since the official launch. Our console has seen many shooters that have made their mark in history and have won high acclaim as being some of the best FPS on any system. Our gaming generation is definitely involved in the FPS craze, and many developers for the Xbox have taken advantage of this popularity by churning out some pretty impressive titles. After all, the Xbox has one of the best FPS ever made. I need not mention the name of this particular epic title. After rounding its second year in the industry, the Xbox hasn't failed to impress FPS lovers, and the future looks bright for not only the genre itself, but likewise for the fans. Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Tides of War (RTCW) is proof of that: Get ready for a WWII action shooter blowout as this award winning bestseller PC title makes the jump to our big black box. Not Your Average WWII First-Person Shooter In RTCW you are Special Agent B.J. Blazcowicz, an army ranger recruited into the Office of Secret Actions (OSA). You are yet another combatant in one of the the nastiest battles of our time, World War II. This WWII title, unlike many others, fuses some very obscure ideas mixed along with real WWII shooting tactics to make a very odd, but very entertaining WWII shooter. You are in charge of defeating a secret enemy not known to the rest of the world. A fierce collective of the undead created by one Heinrich Himmler. Through development and testing, Hitler and his team of evil accomplices have created such an enemy who's sole objective is to help Nazi Germany win the battle of WWII. These interesting concepts, integrated into a very unique storyline and possessing that same old FPS charm, create a very interesting context for an FPS. This kind of story and enemy has never before been seen in many of the other War action shooters. This odd, but bold combination has already proved itself to be great on the PC as players venture deep into Nazi Germany's most secure bases and battlegrounds to uncover the mysteries of this hidden army. RTCW places players in many combat and tactical missions consisting of various objectives with an occult army of zombies, mutants, robots, and regular soldiers littered throughout the levels. The player must successfully complete the tasks in the mission while fighting off the enemy. The game features many of WWII's regular weapons used in real life such as the Thompson and the MP40, along with an array of fictional weapons to help balance the structure of the game's odd context such as the Spyder. The game pits you against some pretty tough AI and very tight situations. Players will need to learn to adjust to the game's unique play mechanics, while using some self-taught combat tactics along the way. This makes for some very interesting gameplay and some very tough enemies. It's The Little Extras As many PC gamers know, this game was released for the PC platform some years back. Many Xbox gamers question a change in the game. Is the game brand new? Or a complete clone? Well, this game offers enough of the original concepts to stay true to the original experience, while offering enough new content to keep it interesting. RTCW has been specifically upgraded and tweaked to give first-timers a taste of perfection, and the old vetrans a new experience to bask in. The fact that the game isn't a straight port is usually enough for people who played it on the PC to go buy it. This game is much more than that. Such modifications and Xbox specific upgrades include: -Enhanced graphics and texture design with the usual resolution tweaks and 60 fps upgrades -Dolby 5.1 digital sound -Co-op action not featured in the PC game -New monsters, weapons, and useable items -An expanded storyline -New missions -Split-screen multiplayer support -System link support -XboxLive support That's right, this game has definitely beefed up since its past PC release. The developer took advantage of what the Xbox had to offer and completely revolutionized ports as the gaming world knows them. This is one port I, as a gamer and an Xbox owner, am truly proud of. Newbies and vetrans alike will find hours of fun to be had with the game. RTCW should be big in the gaming world come release. Co-op action That's right, in this game you get to romp through it with a friend and battle the enemy side by side. While this was not conceivable on the PC, the Xbox can certainly handle it. Activision was smart in doing things right with this one. It seems simple to figure out that gamers want more, and Activision actually kept this in mind. Very impressive stuff. New Everything This is what particularly stuns me. They added new monsters, weapons, expanded the storyline and even added new missions to the Xbox version of the game. The time put into this and the effort put forth by Activision to make this a whole new title is amazing and will not go unnoticed by gamers. Let's just hope that other port-developers are taking notes. The Multiplayer A critical addition to almost every FPS is split-screen multiplayer. With the introduction of the Xbox's system link feature, that also comes into play. Once again, Activision listened to the gamers. RTCW features split-screen multiplayer as well as system link support for the really serious multiplayer gamers. This feature will make for hours of fragging and wild fire, and also push the borders of the gamer's patience with some Ghost Recon-esque tactical sniping matches. Also, some new multiplayer maps will be introduced to fullfill the needs of the multiplayer gamer. This all sounds promising and should turn out to be very impressive. Xbox Live Support Ah, yes, this is the real strongpoint of the game; what everyone has been waiting for. RTCW features Xbox Live support. As we all know, everyone craves more Live games and RTCW seems to be a worthy contender in the wide array of Live titles. The game was already online for the PC and had quite a following the world over. The only pitfall was that it suffered from frequent lag and slowdown problems online and this really made some of the online gaming less fun than it could have been. Fusing this gaming potential with Mircosoft's "broadband only" online gaming experience can only mean one thing: The Xbox Live experience we have all been waiting for. Online matches will mainly consist of the regular Deathmatch fragfests, Capture the Flag, Team Deathmatch, and all the rest. Using the awesome online maps and areas included in the game, this should turn out to be a very unique and fun experience. Live play with RTCW will be a blast, and you can rest assured of that. When Things Get Done Right The Second Time... I personally don't think that "port" would descirbe such a beefed up transfer like RTCW. This game truly deserves the name Return to Castle Wolfenstein 2. With all of the upgrades, tweaks and modifications included, this exciting title should be a mesmerising experience for all Xbox gamers. RTCW seems to have done everything right for itself. It has tied up all of the loose ends from the PC version, added a ton of extras for us faithful Xbox owners and included the most exciting feature for any Xbox title: Live support. This title can only add to the Xbox's growing library of stellar titles to hit store shelves this year. This is the kind of game that makes you feel that you have made the right choice. Yes, it is definitely a great time to be a gamer, especially an Xbox gamer. Evan J. Vickers -- Funxbox Staff
