Affiliation, Admiration and Gaming in General

Editorial By: Telka

I’ll admit. Half the time I sound like an Xbox Fan Girl. Whether it is at the store I work at, ranting about it as I so like to do, or just out in general public wearing a baseball cap with the logo and getting inquiries - it’s apparent to see where a lot of my support lies.

Does this mean I am not a gamer? That I am completely biased because I happen to have a favorite system I am cheering for? Not in my eyes. And I am sure the staff here at funxbox.com would agree with me.

The reason why I am touching this subject is because of an email I received the other day. Simply put in vague introduction and support, it went like this:

I am with holding his name upon respect, but I wanted to use it as an example of what I am about to talk about.

No, there is not an affiliation between Microsoft and us regarding the reviews and promotion of their product. We are, however, a fan site. Fan sites are generally made out of a love and a belief for a product, idea, or person that we hold dear. Microsoft happens to have the same involvement in the Xbox that we do, and if things start to sound a bit of the same, maybe that is because we both admire what we support. We can’t help it if we sound excited. Neither can they. We can’t help it if we want to help promote the console. Neither can they.

If you made a Dragon Ball shrine to Goku, does that mean you are sucking up to Bandai? Does that mean they will send you the next Super Saiyajin figure because - ultimately - you are supporting their product? No. We don’t do this for profit. We don’t get paid anything unless you donate something. The money for this site comes out of Matt’s pockets. And if Matt needs the help, it’ll come out of my pocket also. We do this because we like it, because we have faith in it. And if it sounds like propaganda, maybe it is. And if you don’t like it, then do not visit any fan sites out there because you would just be a hypocrite to do so. What we do get out of this is a linking of different people, with different thoughts, and similar taste for what they like to play. After all, it’s great to be excited about something - but even better to be sharing it with others.

In my short experiences with dealing with a fan site, I wouldn’t trade in the occasional letter I get of another person with impatience to get their hands on Raw is War. Maybe even someone agreeing or disagreeing with my views. Not everyone is going to agree with a review or commentary. We simply can not please everyone considering the varied taste of gamers. But we do welcome feed back. That’s why we have a forum. That’s why we post our email addresses. We would just appreciate if it tends to have a bit more backing to it than just accusations. If you are going to make an analogy comparing me to your 70 year old grandmother, then at least tell me why instead of just saying it. That’s all I ask, and I am sure that’s all anyone else would ask also.

Gaming is about fun. It also is not just about sitting in front of your TV or monitor. Not for many of us at least. Gaming to me has taken on more of a role as I had gotten older. There are the games, the people behind the games, the industry, the politics, the shows, the magazines, websites, fan sites, and a slew of other things that make up gaming. I marvel at all the aspects when I play a game. In fact, it usually makes me more impressed to know what goes on.

I currently have 7 consoles, with it soon being 9 as of next month. This does not include my computer. Do I play them all? I try from time to time. Will I ignore them when the Xbox comes out? No. Do I enjoy gaming? Yes, and working on a fan site for one in particular does not inhibit me from doing such.

Even if Billy paid me.
