An Amazon discount on the PlayStation 3 version of Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, actually provides a way for PS4 owners to snag the game for $40. The online retailer is currently selling the current-gen version of Black Flag for $29.99, a 50% discount off its regular price; however, combined with Sony's upgrade program -- which allows you to upgrade select PS3 games to their PS4 version -- you can get Black Flag on PS4 for just $10 extra.

When purchasing the retail or digital version of Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, you'll also receive an entitlement to download the PS4 digital copy from the PlayStation Store, Sony explained back in September. So here's what you need to do.

First purchase either the physical or digital version of the game on PlayStation 3. Now follow either of these steps:

  • In physical retail purchases, you'll find the code packed into the case of the PS3 version that you can redeem. To play the PS4 version you'll need to insert the original PS3 disc into your PS4 to activate and play the PS4 version, so make sure you hang onto that disc, Sony warns.
  • If you purhcased the digital version, you don't need to redeem the code. Simply look for the PS4 version on the PlayStation Store and it'll appear at a discounted price.
