Xperia Play Launching March 31 in UK with Six Pre-Installed Games
Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play PlayStation phone will be landing in the UK on March 31 with six games already installed. The Android-powered device will function on pay-monthly deals with all the big UK networks.
That won't stop it from potentially appearing in regular game outlets. “We are currently still in commercial conversation, but I’d be surprised if we didn’t see Xperia Play appear in other channels,” David Hilton, the Sony Ericsson Marketing Director for UK and Ireland, told MCV. “All the mobile operators and retailers are selling it. It is rare these days to get a product that is sold everywhere, but this is one of those.”
The UK is familiar with big marketing campaigns, most notably Lost Planet 2, but that endeavor failed to have any impact on the game's sales, as it massively underperformed in the charts. “This will be the biggest marketing campaign we have had in the UK,” Hilton added, probably aware of the mass-marketing attempt by Capcom. Handheld consoles perform well in the UK, though, with the Nintendo DSi posting up 92,000 sales over a two day period.
Looking to replicate that success, the device comes with six pre-installed games: Crash Bandicoot, Bruce Lee Dragon Warriors, Tetris, Star Battalion, FIFA 10 and The Sims 3 will all be packed into the device, along with an additional 50 games available through the PlayStation Suite. It's a nice variety with a little something for everyone. FIFA 10 alone will probably influence a lot of sales.
