Xperia Play Games Will Cost between £1-10
The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play phone's games will range from £1 to £10 (which converts to about $2 to $15) according to David Hilton, Sony Ericsson marketing director for UK and Ireland. He revealed the pricing to MCV, stating, "The smaller, lower-tier games will be around £1 to £2 and a more complex game could be up to £10."
The higher end of the tier system works on a "certified" basis, with the top tier being PlayStation Suite titles, otherwise known as "PlayStation Certified" games. These can consist of old PSone, PlayStation 2, and PSP titles. The medium and low tiers will be comprised of your standard Android games, but the middle tier has enhanced versions of these games, which contain additional content.
Hilton's hopes for competing with the iPhone resides with the Xperia Play's control scheme, which is practically identical to that of a PSP. "The main thing is to offer something different. iPhone is a hugely popular product and Angry Birds on iPhone is a delight," he said. "But now the hardware allows you to play far more complex games. You don’t want to be playing these with your fingers all over the screen. You want full visibility and the ability to control the games with the sort of interfaces you have on your games console."
One could easily assume that the "quality over quantity" approach is present here, and it will be a robust system if used correctly. Tiering games has always been a tricky situation, especially with the lower ends as established franchises already proven within the industry. Sales in the middle tier could be problematic if devs don't get the balance right.
Along with the six games that come preloaded on the device, over 50 new titles will be available closer to the system's launch at the end of the month.
