Xbox Head comments on accidental cross-play between Xbox One, PS4 in Fortnite

Dude, why fix it so soon?

It appears as though Fortnite players were treated to an exciting event in the gaming world without even noticing it at first. Yesterday, cross-platform play was accidentally turned on in Fortnite, allowing PlayStation 4 and Xbox One owners to play online together.

Unfortunately, the incident has been resolved. Fortnite developer Epic confirmed that PS4 and Xbox One players were able to play together because of an error and that error has been corrected, according to a statement obtained by Eurogamer.

"We had a configuration issue and it has now been corrected."

Xbox Head Phil Spencer commented on the event, saying that he would have 'liked' to see Fortnite leave the wall down.

Earlier this year, Microsoft announced that Minecraft would be getting unified play across all of the platforms the game finds itself on, except PlayStation platforms. Sony decided to block cross-platform play between the PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, saying that they needed to be 'mindful' of their community.

It's not the first time Sony neglected to join in on the possibility of cross-play between consoles. Microsoft released a public invitation for other consoles to join them in cross-play back in the beginning of March 2016. Sony didn't join in then, either. Microsoft has insisted that they are 'ready' to bridge the gap between the two online communities when someone finally decides to take part (Nintendo has already joined them).

Other developers have joined in on the conversation, saying that they have discussed cross-network play with Sony as well.
