Why Battlefield 4 is not coming to Wii U

Last night, EA and DICE unveiled Battlefield 4, revealing stunning next-gen visuals along with some explosive gameplay. Powered by Frostbite 3, a 17-minute long gameplay video gave us a brief glimpse of the future of gaming. Unfortunately, it's a somewhat murky future for Wii U owners. Battlefield 4 was confirmed for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC and although no specific next-gen platforms were mentioned, it's a safe bet that it will be available on the PS4 and currently unannounced next Xbox. The Wii U, however, will be skipped out on.

Although Wii U owners argue Nintendo's new console should be considered part of the next-gen gaming talk, there's no denying the system's visuals are unable to compete with that of the PS4 and eventual next Xbox. Apparently the innovative GamePad controller wasn't enough to attract DICE either, as creative director Lars Gustavsson opted for his team to "play it safe" and deliver something "really good."

"I think overall for me as creative director, number one is to deliver a really great game and experience," Gustavsson told Videogamer. "Sometimes, at least for us, it's focus on what you do well and what you know well, and ensure that you deliver something good than trying a bit too much, stretching yourself too thin and risking it."

"I'd rather play it safe, deliver something really good and then look at the future and what could possibly be done than trying a bit too hard and [failing]."

Battlefield 4 is only the latest in a growing list of high-profile multiplatform titles skipping out on the Wii U. Other AAA titles that won't be available on the Wii U include Dead Island: Riptide and Saints Row 4. For Nintendo, it's a scary trend -- especially when games that were once Wii U-exclusive *cough* Rayman Legends *cough* are now heading to Microsoft and Sony's platforms.
