Twisted Metal movie deal announced, Brian Taylor to write and direct

Twisted Metal - 877279

Deadline has reported a deal has been struck between Sony Pictures and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance co-director Brian Taylor to write and direct a live action film based on the iconic PlayStation video game franchise Twisted Metal.

Sony is said to have made a seven figure preemptive deal for Taylor, who co-wrote and co-directed both Crank films and Gamer.

Usually partnering with Mark Neveldine, Twisted Metal will be Taylor's first solo project as writer and director.  He won't be alone on this project, however.  Producers Avi and Ari Arad, who also produced the upcoming Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance film, will work with Taylor on the Twisted Metal movie.  Avi Arid, president and CEO of Marvel Studios has also said he and Ari would be open to producing Mass Effect and Uncharted films, according to Eurogamer.

Unlike the Resident Evil films which have strayed so far away from the game franchise that it's sickening, the Twisted Metal film will actually follow a plot close to the game.  The movie adaptation of the vehicular combat game will focus on an underground event, run by Calypso, that pits people against each other in a battle to the death.  The winner gets any one wish that they want "granted".  For those of you who have played the Twisted Metal games, you should realize why there is emphasis on the word granted.  For those of you who haven't, I suggest you learn a little more about Calypso and his fascination for exploring the human condition, along with how far people are willing to go to get their wish.

Like the game, contestants will outfit their cars with modified armor and destructive weaponry.  Deadline says the film will include signature franchise characters Sweet Tooth, a homicidal clown who drives an ice cream truck, and Doll Face, a young girl trapped behind a porcelain mask who drives an 18-wheeler.

The long awaited Twisted Metal game released on PlayStation 3 yesterday.

David Jaffe, PLEASE, do not let Hollywood do to Twisted Metal what they have done to Resident Evil.  I am begging you!
