Top 25 Games of the Decade (2000-2009) - Day 11

Top 25 Games of the Decade (2000-2009) - #15

GameZone celebrates the end of a glorious decade of gaming

The end of the decade is upon us and it’s time to revisit the landscape of gaming that began in 2000 with the launching of the PlayStation 2 and is now ending in 2009 with three viable console platforms in the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii.

Over the next 25 days, GameZone will be bringing our readers the “Top 25 Games of the Decade.” Considering how many games released in the past ten years, it was an exhausting process to narrow down our initial list of more than 200 games to the top 25.

Factors that played a large part for titles that made the cut included: initial impact, lasting impact, longevity, “standing the test of time”, popularity, advancements in the genre, and much more.  It wasn’t easy picking and choosing between our favorite children, but we feel the games that made our list are representative of the decade that was.

#15 Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 (2000)

Publisher: Activision
Developer: Neversoft
Platforms: PlayStation, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, PC

GameZone Review: 9.7

If there’s one sports star that has affected games more so than any other in the past decade, it would be Mr. Tony Hawk. Not only did his titles redefine how extreme sports titles should be made, but everyone followed suit and tried to emulate Activision’s and Neversoft’s success with the franchise.

As the first in the series to feature Create-a-Park and Park Editor features, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 paved way for customization for several other titles. These two vital features are always in high demand when a skateboarding title is announced and Neversoft delivered the goods with THPS 2.

While also being challenging, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 also rewarded gamers heavily with stylish tricks and incredible combos of difficult maneuvers. Grinding has never been the same since Tony Hawk showed the world how to effectively work it into a title.

Similar to the popularity of Nintendo’s Excitebike for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 is the a perfect example of how a fan base can get behind a title and spread the word of its greatness – even if it was released nine years ago.

When it comes to skateboarding video games, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 is the gold standard.

“Overall, the game is almost near perfect,” Jason Lambert, GameZone.
