Top 25 Games of the Decade (2000-2009) - Day 10

Top 25 Games of the Decade (2000-2009) - #16

GameZone celebrates the end of a glorious decade of gaming

The end of the decade is upon us and it’s time to revisit the landscape of gaming that began in 2000 with the launching of the PlayStation 2 and is now ending in 2009 with three viable console platforms in the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii.

Over the next 25 days, GameZone will be bringing our readers the “Top 25 Games of the Decade.” Considering how many games released in the past ten years, it was an exhausting process to narrow down our initial list of more than 200 games to the top 25.

Factors that played a large part for titles that made the cut included: initial impact, lasting impact, longevity, “standing the test of time”, popularity, advancements in the genre, and much more.  It wasn’t easy picking and choosing between our favorite children, but we feel the games that made our list are representative of the decade that was.

#16 The Sims (2000)

Publisher: Electronic Arts
Developer: Maxis

GameZone Review – 9.0

If there is one game that the whole family can enjoy together on our list, it would have to be The Sims.

Almost everyone – and I mean everyone – has played or at least seen The Sims in action. It was a milestone game that set the PC charts on fire and had the industry in a craze on how to capitalize on Maxis and EA’s success – in other words, make clones.

The Sims also showed that the female gamer audience can actually be a viable market to cater towards. The Sims is the best-selling PC game of all time and it is for good reason that it resides at the top.

Creating a virtual family within a world that had no repercussions for failures or mistakes, The Sims was a home away for home for millions of gamers worldwide.

Providing a lot of worthwhile memories that are most likely shared amongst gamers who had similar experiences, The Sims was one of the first games that provided laughs when our character urinated in their pants since we forgot to tell them to go to the bathroom.

A classic still to this day, The Sims is a title that time will not forget.

“It is compelling, addictive, fun, frustrating, well-designed and intriguing,” Michael Lafferty, GameZone.
