Tiny Brains is an action-puzzler from former Assassin’s Creed and Army of Two devs

New studio Spearhead Games, which brings together developers with all-star credentials, is working on a small indie game that lets the team "go back to the basics."

Tiny Brains is a action-puzzler where players must cooperate to guide four super-powered lab rats through test courses. It's being made by Simon Darveau, the former design director of Assassin's Creed 3; Malik Boukhira, who handled game design on Assassin's Creed 2 and Dead Space 3; and Atul Mehra, the development director of Army of Two. Their background might be in triple-A development, but they're scaling back on the workforce, resources, and budget for this title.

So far the design process has been much more "organic and natural," the Montreal-based team told Polygon.

"We are far more agile and decisions are made super fast," said Mehra. "That's not how we used to work on triple-A games, and that really was our objective with Spearhead Games, to handle it organically."

Spearhead will show the game, which is only four months into development, at PAX East next week. It's scheduled to launch later this year on unspecified platforms.

It's good to see more developers breaking out of the blockbuster space and making games that are simple and fun. Robert Bowling, the former creative strategist on Call of Duty, is doing the same. If you missed it, check out today's interview with the Robotoki company president.
