The Witness may not be a PS4-exclusive forever

If the only reason to purchase a PlayStation 4 was to play Jonathan Blow's intriguing new open world puzzler The Witness, then you may want to think again. Although it was said during the Sony event this week that The Witness would make its console debut on the PS4, Blow has explained that it's not a permanent exclusive.

"Our deal with Sony is a limited-time exclusivity that applies only to competing console platforms," Blow said. "Basically it is that you will see the game on the PlayStation 4 before you will see it on the Wii U or the next Microsoft console, if the game ever appears on either of those."

Sony's deal doesn't keep Blow from releasing The Witness on PC or iOS at launch, so it is possible we could see the game come to those platforms as well. "The ideal situation for us is to release everything simultaneously or close to simultaneously," he said. That, of course, will come down to whether or not his team can get it ready for multiple platforms in time.

The Witness was first revealed at Sony's PlayStation 4 event. It provided a unique approach to gaming void of guns and explosions, like many of the other games on display. Instead, it presented a world ripe with colors and puzzles -- puzzles with ideas inside of them. It will be up to you to unlock those ideas.

The Witness doesn't yet have a release date, but the PlayStation 4 is due out in Holiday 2013.
