Sonic Trailer Teases Return to Old School
Earlier this week, we reported that Sega had registered a domain name for Sonic Generations. We were unsure of what the company was planning, but figured it had something to do with the future of the series. Now Sega has released a teaser on the Sonic the Hedgehog Facebook page announcing a new title for 2011 that may be Sonic Generations.
The CG video shows the iconic blue hedgehog running through an old school environment only to be met by a smaller, pudgier, much more classic version of himself. The two versions of Sonic race down the path, which features a lot of black and white to signify the classic appeal of the series. The trailer ends with the two Sonics going off into the distance.
Not much is known about the new game, but the teaser did reveal that it would launch later this year for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network. The game may return the series to its roots, and ... wait a minute. Didn't Sega already do that with Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 and Sonic Colors on the Nintendo DS? To me, this game just seems like a new Sonic sidescroller, which definitely isn't a bad thing. Perhaps Sega is trying to go really old school. Maybe they'll give Sonic back his old look and the older game physics because everyone (except for me) disliked the way Sonic 4 felt.
In any case, you can expect to see more of the blue blur on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 via digital download later this year. I'm pretty excited about the game, and look forward to seeing where Sega takes Sonic next. I'm way more excited about this than those overrated fan games that seem to pop up all too frequently.
