Shenmue 3 is "Probably" Going to Happen

File this one under “things an ambitious visionary said that may just be pie in the sky nonsense,” but at his Game Developer's Conference panel, Yu Suzuki had a few promising words to say about the possibility of Shenmue 3.

“Probably Sega will let me make it. I think. It's simply a problem of budget.”

The original Shenmue was a wildly expensive game for its time, so you can imagine that a Shenmue 3 would at least be up there, especially for a publisher like Sega. While Suzuki's answer is no means a confirmation that the game will be made, it's nice to know that he's still pushing to finish the series he started in 1999.

Perhaps the bigger question is, what would a modern day Shenmue even be like? While the game was hugely influential at the time, those influenced went on to make much better games. A new Shenmue game would have to be drastically different from the slow-paced, QTE-infused original.

Would you like to see a new Shenmue after all these years? Or is it a little too late to consider it?

Joe Donato Video games became an amazing, artful, interactive story-driven medium for me right around when I played Panzer Dragoon Saga on Sega Saturn. Ever since then, I've wanted to be a part of this industry. Somewhere along the line I, possibly foolishly, decided I'd rather write about them than actually make them. So here I am.
