Shenmue City cancelled, series future doubtful

I've got to admit that I've got a bit of a soft spot in my heart for Shenmue, the open-world marital arts epic that has been waiting ten years for a third and final installment. Thing is that Yu Suzuki deserves the chance to finish this game. I mean hell, the man gave us After Burner, Out Run, Virtua Fighter and plenty more Sega classics, and nobody has the balls to finance his critically-acclaimed series?

It's all about profit with you game industry types. Sheesh.

Anyhow, Yu Suzuki had tried to reboot the series this past year with Shenmue City, a Mafia Wars-esque mobile title which let players fight alongside various factions within the Shenmue universe. Today, the game's website has been updated with a splash screen thanking everybody for playing, what looks like it could be the final nail in the Shenmue coffin.

I need to find my Dreamcast and mourn this series properly. Time to question some sailors.
