Using the familiar trappings of
Rogue style gameplay, Scallywag: In the Lair of the Medusa adds its own unique
spin to the world of random Monty Haulism. Players take on the role of Rapius
(farm laborer by choice, champion of all that is good and holy by circumstance)
as he descends into a labyrinth consisting of eighty levels, spread amidst eight
different worlds. During his descent Rapius will face numerous challenges, from
the environment to the dangerous denizens of the dark. And it is very, very
dark…

Key to Rapius’ survival is his
lantern. Players can burn the lantern bright to extend Rapius’ vision range, and
hopefully get the drop on unfriendly critters, but at the cost of burning
through oil (which can only be replaced by finding flasks) at a rapid pace.
Conversely, Rapius can lower his lantern until its but a mere pinprick of light,
saving his oil, and making it possible to sneak through the underground abyss.
Of course, with his vision now extending only a few feet in front of him it
makes it that much easier to bump into a baddie. So, do you keep the lantern
burning hot, soft, or somewhere in between? Do you go for the bold first strike,
or strike from the shadows?

The creatures Rapius will face vary
from minor annoyances to the "Oh God, I’d rather slit my own throat with a rusty
grapefruit spoon than have to face that!" variety. The things trying to kill you
all have varying strengths and weaknesses, and learning what works and what
doesn’t is half the fun. The other half is of course killing them and taking
their stuff.

The loot in Scallywag: In the Lair
of the Medusa, runs the gamut of goodies, with plenty of arms and armaments to
make Rapius the ultimate killing machine, ‘urrah! There are items to be
combined, and plenty of magic to be had. In addition, regardless of what you
were told as a child, eating strange things you find on the floor can be a
rewarding experience! There is a variety of magic mushrooms, brews, whiskeys,
and fungus to ingest, all with unique and startling properties. Why crawl
through a dungeon when you can "fly" through it, courtesy of your local
neighborhood mystical flora?

There are many more surprises to
discover in Scallywag: In the Lair of the Medusa, and just when you think you’ve
seen them all thanks to RAGe, you haven’t. RAGe stands for Random Adventure Game
engine, and allows players to mod Scallywag: In the Lair of the Medusa to their
hearts’ content. Practically anything and everything can be modified, the limit
is up to you! Add new monsters, items, and music with just a few file
modifications that require absolutely no programming experience. If you’re not
feeling that adventurous you can simply tweak the base game. Make it longer.
Shorter. Ramp the difficulty up with more monsters, or lower it by making Rapius
hardier. You’re in total control.

Scallywag: In the Lair of the Medusa
is in final testing and is expected to be released later this year. For the
