In the third week since its release in Japan, the PlayStation Vita has sold 42,648 units - about 30,000 less than last week.

Media Create has released the sales numbers for the final week of 2011 and has revealed another week of low sales for the PS Vita.

In comparsion, the PS Vita's biggest rival, the Nintendo 3DS, sold 197,952 units - or more than 4 times as many units as the Vita.  The Nintendo 3DS once again led all hardware in sales in Japan, followed by the PlayStation 3 with 67,000 units sold.

Overall, the PlayStation Vita finished fourth in sales - ahead of the Wii, Nintendo DS, Xbox 360, and PS2 but behind the 3DS, PS3, and PSP.

Below are the sales numbers for the week of December 26 to January 1:

  1. 3DS – 197,952
  2. PS3 – 67,199
  3. PSP – 62,746
  4. Vita – 42,648
  5. Wii – 33,208
  6. DSi LL – 3,356
  7. Xbox 360 – 2,453
  8. DSi – 2,418
  9. PS2 – 1,659
  10. DS Lite – 28

For comparison's sake, here are sales numbers for the previous week in Japan - as reported by Media Create.

  1. 3DS – 482,200
  2. PSP – 101,121
  3. Wii – 91,176
  4. PS3 – 75,943
  5. Vita – 72,479
  6. DSi LL – 8,470
  7. DSi – 5,894
  8. Xbox 360 – 4,245
  9. PS2 – 1,582
  10. DS Lite – 32

Remember, the previous week did contain the holidays, so numbers for all hardware were up.  I think the important thing to take away from this comparison is just how dominant the Nintendo 3DS has been these past few weeks.

While some analysts have reasoned that the Vita's slow sales are due to confusing model options and weak launch incentives, I still stand by my original feelings that the PS Vita is just too expensive.
