Outlast releases for PS4 today; free for PS Plus members
The day is finally here. Later today, Outlast will be releasing for PlayStation 4. What's more, it'll be free this month for anyone who is a PlayStation Plus member.
For those unfamiliar, Outlast is described by developer Red Barrels as a "survival-horror game with one common goal: "to scare the *bleep* of you you." And scare it will. I played just a small portion of the PC game and almost crapped my pants. Reviewer Mike Splechta played it in its entirety -- scoring it 8.5/10 -- and called it "the scariest game I've ever played in my life."
Outlast puts you behind the camera of investigative journalist Miles Upshur as he explores Mount Massive Asylum. Acting on a tip from an anonymous source, Upshur breaks into the facility and discovers something that walks "a terrifying line between science and religion, nature and something entirely other."
"So, in short, you’re a journalist who’s found himself in a very wrong place at the very wrong time. You can’t hope to defend yourself against the mutated patients of the asylum, so you have to sneak, run, and hide… or die," adds Red Barrels co-founder Philippe Morin. "We’ve done our best to create a memorable roller-coaster ride, one that entertains, scares, and leaves you craving more."
New to the PS4 version is a difficulty level called "insane." In this mode, you'll have very low health, very few batteries, no checkpoints, and no chance to save your game.
Outlast is expected to be available once the PlayStation Store is updated. Here are the other free PlayStation Plus games for February.
