No Rush For BioShock Movie

Irrational Games’ own Ken Levine, creative director and co-founder, talked to Industry Gamers about the BioShock movie.  Can you even imagine?  The BioShock series has ALL the elements to make a cinematic dream.  The plot and the environment are definitely there.  If a deal and cast could be found, my fan boy fantasies would be answered.  This movie has been an ongoing project though and sadly it has yet to set afloat.

Talk of the movie was first rumored around 2008.  Take Two announced director Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean) entered the project.  Due to budget issues though no deal was ever finalized thus the movie never got started.

Irrational Games is taking the approach to this movie where they don’t want to just make it for the sake of making it.  Levine says, “We got very close to having it get made – we had a deal in place and a director. But for us there’s no burning [desire] to have a movie made just to get it made.”

Like the rest of the game designers’ creations, they won’t make the BioShock movie unless they are happy with the project.  This is another element slowing down the movie creation process. BioShock has a hearty following and high expectations for excellence.  “For us and for Take-Two, it’s really got to be something that will give the fans something that they want, and, for those who don’t know BioShock, really introduce them to something that is consistent with the game,” Levine said.  “There are differences between games and movies, no doubt, but the movie has to draw from the same DNA in terms of the world and the story beats.”

As a fan, I’d rather Irrational Games take their time and make a quality product than something that could give a stigma to the series.  They are taking a similar stance as Ubisoft is on their Assassin’s Creed movie.
