Nintendo Reveals 3DS Handheld

The latest addition to the Nintendo DS family to offer 3D gaming without requiring special glasses

Reports are flooding about Nintendo’s latest entry to their DS line of handhelds, the 3DS. The handheld is set to launch in the company’s fiscal year, meaning that it will release between April 2010 and March 2011. While details are still pretty scarce, it has been confirmed that the system will offer 3D support without the use of 3D glasses.

The system’s “3DS” moniker is only a temporary name, as no official title has been announced. Nintendo’s official announcement stated that the system will be backwards compatible with existing DS and DSi games, indicating that the handheld will have some form of built-in memory for DSiWare.

Additionally, various rumors of the game’s features have been coming in from Japan, as business daily Nikkei has reported that the system will also feature a 3D thumbstick and rumble support, although this has not been confirmed by Nintendo.

The announcement comes before Nintendo’s planned release for the latest DS redesign, the Nintendo DSi XL, which boasts larger screens than existing models. Nintendo will be revealing more details on the system at this year's E3 event in Los Angeles, from June 15 to 17.
