Nintendo 3DS stays hot in Japan, 240K units sold in first week of 2012
The hot streak Nintendo 3DS was on at the end of last year was not a fluke as unit sales in Japan only grew this past week. Starting off the first week in 2012, Nintendo sold 240,819 3DS units - about 43,000 more than the previous week. The closest selling hardware was the PlayStation 3 which sold 74,459 units. The PlayStation Vita, the 3DS' biggest rival, sold only 42,915 units.
In addition to the impressive hardware sales, 3DS software dominated sales in Japan as well. Four of the top five selling games were Nintendo 3DS titles.
Mario Kart 7 was the highest selling game, again, with 157,000 copies sold. Super Mario 3D Land also broke the 100K barrier, selling 119,093 copies. Other 3DS titles that sold well include Monster Hunter 3G (98,355 units sold) and Inazuma Eleven Go: Shine/Dark (56,134 units sold).
These sales were from the week spanning January 2, 2012 to January 8, 2012.
