Ninja Gaiden-like Nioh coming this year, demo out this month

10 years in the making

Ninja Gaiden developer Team Ninja today announced that its 10-year-old hack-and-slash project, Nioh, will release exclusively on PS4 by the end of 2016.

Nioh is a clear successor to Ninja Gaiden’s flashy combat. Since the game’s reveal in 2006, it has also been called “Dark Souls meets Toukiden Kiwami,” an Eastern and more arcade-y take on From Software’s brutal formula. Players will have on opportunity to experience the game themselves later this month, as a playable “alpha demo” is due by the end of April.

“Set in a time of civil war in Japan, Nioh not only incorporates classic elements such as samurai and supernatural creatures from Japanese folklore,” Team Ninja said on the PlayStation Blog, “but also offers the exhilaration of an authentic samurai sword fight straight from Team Ninja, the team that defined brutal action games.”

Not unlike Final Fantasy 15’s Platinum Demo, which unlocks an in-game companion, Nioh’s alpha demo will reward players with the “Mark of the Conqueror” DLC. The demo, along with an accompanying survey, will be available from April 26 through May 5.
