Mobile Gaming Surpasses Consoles according to PopCap Survey
PopCap Games, the developer behind successful games such as Plants vs. Zombies and Bejeweled, recently conducted a survey to see just how mobile gaming stacks up against console gaming in the US and UK. As it turns out, mobile gaming has risen over the past couple of years and as a result has surpassed gaming-playing on home consoles and PCs. Dennis Ryan of PopCap Games stated, "Mobile games are, along with social games, the hottest sector of the video game industry by far."
The survey findings concluded that 52 percent of the 2,425 participants confirmed that they had played mobile games in the past. In both the US and UK, 33.6 percent of the survey applicants stated that they had played games on their mobile devices in the past month. An additional 24.6 percent said they had clocked in some game time on their handsets within the past week. And out of the users who owned smartphones, a total of 83 percent confirmed playing mobile games in the past week.
According to Ryan, as more people begin to own smartphones, the number of mobile gamers will increase: "As more people purchase smartphones and the entire process of finding, purchasing, and playing mobile games becomes as simple as browsing the Internet, the mobile games market is going to accelerate even more."
PopCap's survey certainly made some noteworthy findings. It's going to be interesting to see if the trend increases as more gamers purchase mobile handsets. With developers now focusing more on mobile game creation than before, gaming on phones is likely to increase greatly within the next few years.
