Miyamoto Confirms New Mario Game for 2011
Earlier this year at GDC, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata made it clear that Mario would make his debut on the 3DS in a game developed by the Super Mario Galaxy team. The reveal has caused much excitement for fans and adopters of Nintendo's new dual screen handheld. Aside from the previous announcement, however, not much is known regarding "Super Mario 3DS."
Famed Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto recently shed some light on the state of the franchise. In an interview with French gaming news site Gameblog, the renowned designer talked about Mario's 25th anniversary last year and assured that a new Mario game would land in 2011. "I promise to do everything to deliver your new Mario this year," he said.
Could the highly animated industry veteran be talking about Super Mario 3DS? Given Iwata's previous reveal, it's likely that Nintendo will be releasing a new Mario title for the 3DS before the year comes to a close. If not a new game, then the manufacturer may opt to remake one of the famous plumber's past adventures in full stereoscopic 3D. During the interview, Miyamoto said that Mario may still fly using the Tanooki suit. Either Super Mario Bros. 3 will be remade for the 3DS or an all-new game will be developed featuring one of the most popular Mario power-ups of all time.
While I truly enjoy the chubby plumber's old school escapades, the Mario fan in me would like nothing more than to see a brand new game for the 3DS. After all, the first games in the series have been remade so many times that fans are expecting something new. Here's hoping the Mario Galaxy team creates a new game in a style similar to the critically acclaimed Wii titles and throws in some cool new power-ups as well as some classic favorites. Kuribo's Shoe, anyone?
In related Nintendo news, Shiggy also discussed the 25th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda. Fans of Nintendo's grand action-adventure franchise can expect "many products" to commemorate the occasion this year. Aside from Skyward Sword and Ocarina of Time 3D, what other Zelda goodies are we bound to see in 2011? I predict a re-release of The Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition. I just hope Majora's Mask actually works this time!
