Maxis fixing SimCity's buggy, congested traffic


SimCity can be a great game -- when working properly. As it stands now, one major feature not working as intended is the game's traffic system. For anyone who has a semi-large city, you'll notice your Sims don't exactly drive in the most sensible pattern. Rather than taking a less congested road, they'll wait for hours in long lines of traffic resulting in congested roadways. 

As lead designer Stone Librande explained in his latest blog post, "Agents", or the individual cars/people traveling to their destination, often tend to take the shortest route between point A and point B. "We understand there will be unavoidable (and illogical) traffic jams, so we are retuning these values to make the traffic flow more realistically."

"To dig a little deeper our roads will have a weighting system based on 25%, 50% and 75% capacity. As a road hits those marks it will become less and less appealing for other cars, increasing the likelihood of them taking an alternate path if one exists," he clarified. Librande also addressed emergency vehicles and assured they will not get blocked in their garages. They will also move into empty lanes to get around traffic jams. Service vehicles are also being changed so that they no longer clump up; now only one fire truck will respond to a fire instead of two.

Librande said they are currently testing a patch internally and hope to have it out "soon." Hopefully, it's very soon.
