Marvel Universe Details Confirmed
Last night at a bar in San Francisco, Marvel Entertainment invited press to officially announce details on Marvel Universe, the long overdue MMO taking place in Marvel's massive canon of comics, films, and games. Developer Gazillion, who also created Marvel Super Hero Squad, has more than a year's development on the game.
The most important news is two-fold. Firstly, the game will be free-to-play. It is currently in development for the PC, and the team responsible, Secret Identity, will not confirm whether it is a browser-based or client-side MMO. When asked how the F2P structure will pan out, the developer refused to comment.
The other big news is the announcement that players will control the heroes themselves. Unlike peer superhero MMO DC Universe Online, players will not be creating B-tier sidekicks, but rather fighting as Iron Man, Spider-Man, Hulk, Wolverine, and ... Squirrel Girl ... themselves. Secret Identity would not discuss how this mechanic will work, so plenty of questions remain about the MMO.
In other news, Brian Micheal Bendis is the writer behind the game. Bendis is a top force in the comics industry, leading the charge on Marvel stories. When asked about the sources that will inspire Marvel Universe, Bendis confirmed that all material is potentially applicable to gameplay elements. I personally am hoping for a Marvel Zombies event during Halloween.
Unfortunately, a lot still remains unclear. With no release date, official set of characters (Gazillion says there will be a lot), or defined structure, Marvel Universe is still an ambiguous game.
