L.A. Noire to Be Featured at Tribeca Film Festival


Hollywood has been trying for years to profit from the success of video games. From licensed movie games, movies based on games, to weird cross-media tie-ins like Angry Birds Rio, the film industry is always looking to cash in. Now they're attempting to get on gamers' good sides by featuring a game at one of their prestigious film festivals.

The 2011 Tribeca Film Festival, a week-long celebration of new films in Manhattan, will be honoring its first video game: Rockstar's L.A. Noire. The game is included in Tribeca's Official Selection. “What Rockstar and Team Bondi have accomplished with L.A. Noire is nothing less than groundbreaking,” said Geoff Gilmore, Tribeca Enterprises' chief creative officer. “It's an invention of a new realm of storytelling that is part cinema, part gaming, and a whole new realm of narrative expression, interactivity, and immersion. We are poised on the edge of a new frontier.”

Of all the games Tribeca could choose to feature at the event, L.A. Noire is one of the most appropriate. What I've seen of the game tells me it's the kind of cinematic experience that even the snobbiest of film critics may give more than a passing glance. Its historical portrayal of Hollywood in its glamorous beginnings probably helps, too.

I do feel a little weird about the whole thing. Tribeca is a film festival, not a game festival. One game could turn into a dozen, and before you know it, Tribeca could become the next big game convention. It's a similar story with conventions like Comic Con, which are dominated by other mediums, or GDC, which has started to stray from its developer-focused mantra. People really like video games, and the medium is leaking into just about everything.
