Indie game The Flock: A potential experience to remember

The Flock will feature unique gameplay and a killer ending

If you've never heard of the incredibly unique indie game, The Flock, you're doing yourself a serious disfavor. It's being developed by Vogelsap, which consists of Dutch university students. They had the gall to design, and produce, a 3D first person survival horror MMO in only their second year of school. You'd hardly know this fact by looking at the game though. The visuals and gameplay make The Flock look like it was made by pros.

The game's concept is really what makes it distinctive. Players will all start the game as hunters in the flock. These grotesque, skeletal creatures hunt the maps for the artifact, a lighted sphere. The first to find the artifact becomes the carrier. This player must carry the light to different locations on the map, and when they've shined the artifact's light on all these objectives, they win the game. However, at the same time, all the remaining flock members will be out to get the carrier. They want the artifact for themselves to win of course. The light of this artifact is the carrier's only defense, as its brilliance kills any hunters that move in front of it. Check out this video to see first hand what The Flock's gameplay will look like.

While The Flock will already be an MMO like no other, Vogelsap has revealed that the game will have an unheard of sense of finality. A player's death in the game will permanently lower the population of the flock in the game. When the population reaches zero, The Flock will no longer be available for purchase. Once this happens, only the people who have previously downloaded it will be able to participate in the game's ending. Once the climax has been played, The Flock itself will no longer be playable by anyone.

In this way, The Flock will almost be more of a life experience than a game. You'll participate in it, possibly become invested in it, and then never be able to revisit it later. If you think you're still up to the challenge, and want to live through it yourself, keep an eye out for The Flock on Steam in quarter three of 2015.
