Hitman director disappointed by low game-completion rate
The addition of online gaming has been an outstanding success for the gaming industry and gamers alike; it’s evolved the way people play games both recreationally and competitively – with their friends and strangers as well. These successes, though, haven’t all benefited developers, as statistics reveal the lowest game-completion rate in history – one thing that’s disappointed the likes of Tore Blystad, Hitman: Absolution's director.
In an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine, Blystad noted that only around 20 percent of players are playing through entire single-player experiences, a rate that was once much over 50 percent. Blystad, who’s working on an extensive single-player experience with Absolution, told the magazine that the trend is “horrible to know. It makes the people working on it really really sad."
Blystad also commented on the fact that so many of today’s games are centered on multiple playthroughs: “The general player will probably never even finish the game, which is very sad. Or they might only play through it once, but the game is built for the people who want to go back through every single level and get all the stuff out of it. It’s built to last, rather than be a one-off experience.”
As a gamer that generally “completes” all of his games, I find this trend upsetting as well. Sure, multiplayer is lifting the industry to new heights, but so many games these days are being ignored because its either a multiplayer-focused experience, or a title that offers an immerse campaign only. I can’t help but wonder how games like Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning would have sold a decade ago when single-player was still the selling point in every game.
