Halo 4 live action web series 'Forward Unto Dawn' debuts this Fall
Microsoft is ramping up the transmedia promotions for their blockbuster title Halo 4, set to release later this year, with the announcement of a new live action web series: Forward Unto Dawn.
Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn will launch in the Fall, just ahead of the Halo 4's November 6th release. It will play exclusively on Machinima and Microsoft's Halo Waypoint. There will be five weekly installments, each around 15 minutes long, that tells the story of how Master Chief inspired a young UNSC cadet who will eventually become a leader aboard the UNSC Infinity Spacecraft.
Microsoft has been stingy on details choosing, instead, to wait until Comic-Con this July to reveal more about the series. We do know, however, that this new character will tie into the plot of Halo 4, while providing a flashback to the beginning of the Halo franchise's war between the humans and the Covenant.
Halo has been a staple title for the Xbox and Xbox 360 since Combat Evolved released back in 2001. Of course, it's been 10 years since the first game so there is a lot of catching up to do if you haven't yet played them. Matt McCloskey, director of franchise business management at 343 Industries, hopes this new Halo 4 web series will "make Halo accessible for people who haven't played the games."
"We wanted to do something unique from a narrative standpoint that's big in scale," McCloskey added. Grand it is; the web series is said to be the "largest investment" Microsoft has made in a live action to date.
The company hopes the web series will be "the next step" for getting the franchise eventually onto the big screen. Following the series run, Microsoft plans to package the entire production in some form to "live on" on other platforms.
