GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS LAUNCHES CONTEST ON iPHONE AND iPOD TOUCH TO CROWN NEW WORLD RECORD HOLDER

Warner Bros. Digital Distribution and Guinness World RecordsTM today challenged iPhone and iPod Touch owners to become a certified Guinness World Records record holder. By playing the “Video Game Score” challenge in the Guinness World Records game app and holding the world record for most points on August 15, 2009, one player will be immortalized by having their name recorded in the Guinness World Records 2010 Gamer’s Edition as the iPhone gaming champion.

To participate, consumers first download the Guinness World Records game on the App Store. Once in the game they create a GameSpy account so their score can be verified and recorded remotely. Every player has a customizable avatar that roams the globe to find and enter competitions. The “Video Game Score” competition can be found in the Cape Canaveral area. With the press of a button, players can sync their score for each game to their GameSpy account. For detailed instructions visit: http://iphone.warnerbros.com/gwr/.

These digital competitions are as wacky and bizarre as they are challenging and fun. From crushing watermelons with the player’s head and plucking feathers from a turkey, to throwing a washing machine the farthest, all using the touch screen and motion sensing technologies of the iPhone and iPod touch, the fun never stops. The Guinness Worlds Records app is available now on the App Store for $4.99.

Craig Glenday, Editor-in-Chief of Guinness World Records, said: “Guinness World Records inspires people everywhere to dream about breaking their own records and joining other record holders in the annual publication. Players can instantly upload their scores to Gamespy’s online leaderboard and truly gain bragging rights as they not only compete against friends – but the whole world.”

Guinness World Records game app features 36 of the most outrageously challenging games found on the iPhone/iPod touch. They include:

  • “Cockroach Eating” – Feeling hungry? “Eat” the most in-game arthropods in the fastest time possible without ever having to touch a real bug. The current real life Guinness World Record of 36 cockroaches eaten in one minute was set by Ken Edwards. Mmm… crunchy!

  • “Melon Crush” – Feeling destructive? Smash the most watermelons with your head in one minute to beat John Allwood’s actual Guinness World Record of 40, without ever having to pick seeds and bits melon out of your hair.

  • “Largest Bubblegum Balloon” – Chad Fell’s current real life Guinness World Record bubblegum bubble had a diameter of 20 inches and took more than three pieces of gum to accomplish, but all you need is the game app.
