Gears of War 3 Takes Halo's Old Seat, Coming September 20

Microsoft has finally announced a firm release date for Gears of War 3, marking September 20 as the day the last chapter in Epic's trilogy will hit store shelves. The game experienced one of the more high-profile delays in recent history when it was moved from a spring release to fall last year. Now it occupies the chair that Halo had claimed as its own for the series' previous three games.

The latter half of September was more or less where Halo told all other games to make room, much as Call of Duty did in November. With Gears claiming that spot, it seems that Microsoft is declaring the game as their flagship exclusive for this holiday.

Some are singing to a different tune, though. Many have speculated that the release date choice is in fact meant to usher in another Halo—the rumored Halo: Combat Evolved remake. If this rumor were true, the Gears 3 date would leave November open for an anniversary release of the Halo remake. We may find out soon enough exactly what Microsoft has up its sleeve, as the company is preparing to make some big announcements in the coming days.
