Gamers Complain about Free Titles from Sony

I was annoyed by this whole PlayStation Network debacle. At first, I was perturbed because all I wanted to do was play The Fancy Pants Adventures. But when word got out that millions of users' data might have been compromised, I was furious at just how careless Sony had been with their security measures. Now that the worst part is behind us, the PlayStation 3 and PSP manufacturer has outlined the details for its apologetic initiative, offering something to gamers who were affected by the PSN downtime.

PlayStation 3 owners will be able to choose two titles from the following: Dead Nation, inFAMOUS, LittleBigPlanet, Super Stardust HD, and Wipeout HD (and its Fury expansion). PSP players can also select two games out of a chosen four: Killzone Liberation, LittleBigPlanet, ModNation Racers, and Pursuit Force. Individuals who own both systems have the opportunity to select two games for each. Not a bad trade off considering how good all of these games are. And this is just the start of what will include 30 days of free PSN+ services and other neat incentives.

Despite the caliber of these titles, plenty of gamers have voiced their frustration toward Sony for choosing games that "everyone already owns." SCEE Head of Communications Nick Caplin responded to the negative comments from gamers on the PlayStation Blog by saying that Sony chose those titles because they didn't want to pawn some poor downloadable titles on gamers (like Microsoft did when they offered fans a free Undertow download). "I'm really sorry that there is nothing there that you want," said Caplin. "We've tried really hard to put together a list of high quality BD games, rather than simply offering cheaper PSN titles. The average Metacritic rating for these games is over 84 percent, so these are high quality games. Unfortunately with a user base of 77m people, it is really hard to offer something for everyone."

Though plenty of gamers already own most of these games, at least Sony is giving PSN users the opportunity to get some good titles for free. Also, I've read that many gamers don't have Dead Nation and are complaining about getting it by default. It's a damn fine game, people. As for me, I'll be taking inFAMOUS and Wipeout HD.
