EA to Focus on PC Gaming
EA Games president Frank Gibeau expressed interest in expanding further into the PC gaming market. The company's Playfish division earned the number two spot as one of the most successful developers for Facebook games, making EA an obvious powerhouse in the online gaming market. According to Gibeau, the company can only go forward: "There's a lot of transition going on in this industry and we're really well positioned for that. We feel like we're on the offensive. We're moving from a fire-and-forget packaged goods model to an online services model."
Gibeau stated that EA will follow the PC gaming model that is currently big in Asia, citing free-to-play games as a major driving force. The EA Games president said that the PC was a "healthy platform" and may be the company's "biggest platform" going forward: "The user base is gigantic. PC retail may be a problem, but PC downloads are awesome."
Regardless of EA's new focus on the PC games market, Gibeau assured that they won't be ignoring console gaming. Aside from the strong games they plan on releasing for the current generation of titles, the publisher is also looking ahead at the next generation. EA's rise will continue, the online gaming market being the company's primary focus.
