EA responds to fears that Star Wars: Battlefront 2 will be pay-to-win

No one can ever fully win the microtransactions battle.

Following a series of videos detailing Star Wars Battlefront 2's in-game progression, some fans have expressed fears that the game may be moving too close to "pay-to-win" territory (check out the comments section on this YouTube video). In speaking with Eurogamer, an EA spokesperson has further clarified how the progression system will work.

They said:

"Players will be rewarded in the game through regular play in many different, earnable ways including crates. For those that want to accelerate the rewards, they can do so by purchasing crates that contain randomised items and rewards."

It's still uncertain how big of an advantage paying to accelerate the rewards will be, but by all accounts, it sounds like there will be a benefit to be had. Part of Battlefront 2's unlock system rewards players with Crafting Parts, which can, in turn, be used to upgrade Star Cards (your abilities).

Sure, the Crate drops are random, but as some of the commenters point out if someone were to drop a bunch of money on Crates and happened to instantly unlock a bunch of high-level stuff, that immediately puts the casual player at a disadvantage.  We aren't simply talking about cosmetic items; some actual in-game mechanics can be altered by the drops.

Star Wars: Battlefront 2 put on an excellent show during E3 2017 showing off a 40-player multiplayer match with Prequel and Sequel Trilogy content. The game will not have a Season Pass, but it looks like that revenue will be replaced via microtransactions.

That said, it remains to be seen how this will all shake out. It wouldn't be the first time that people raise a fuss over nothing before seeing the final product, but we shall see once Star Wars: Battlefront 2 releases on PC, PS4, and Xbox One on November 17th, 2017.
