Divinity: Original Sin 2 reveals their Dungeons & Dragons-style Game Master mode

Create your own virtual tabletop sessions.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 keep rolling along through its incredibly successful Early Access run. Earlier today, developer Larian Studios pulled back the curtain on Original Sin 2's final stretch goal, Game Master mode. The new mode lets players take all of Divinity: Original Sin 2's game mechanics and features to turn them into their own Tabletop-style RPG within the game. It's certainly a feature that has been lacking in the industry as a whole, with games like Sword Coast Legends attempting something similar back in 2015, with largely mixed results.

Original Sin 2 released its 36th Kickstarter Update video showing off the Game Master mode in action. Here is that video.

The Game Master mode lets up to four players, plus a Game Master engage in a custom RPG campaign where every little detail from the story to enemy placement, and even item names can be customized to your heart's content. Game Masters can also use Original Sin 2's modding tool to build their own takes on classic battle arenas, rural villages, and haunted ruins environments that you'd find in many fantasy adventures.

NPC interactions and general role-playing take place within the game's "vignettes" system that allows the game master to create text cards that present dialog options to the players as well as dice-based skill checks. Yes, there's dice! When battles break out, game masters can take control of enemy opponents to try and make things as difficult as possible for the players, or take control of friendly NPC's to help them out.

Naturally, it wouldn't be proper modding if you can't share it, so any Game Master who creates their own campaign will be able to upload them to the Steam Workshop for others to play.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 is available now in Early Access on both Steam and GOG.com.
