Dead Space producer: Gears of War's story is 'atrocious'

It's no secret that the storytelling in the Gears of War series is pretty bad, right? I mean, the games take themselves way too seriously. Come on, how can we believe that a hulking (roided out) beefcake like Marcus Fenix actually has feelings?

Chuck Beaver, story producer for Dead Space, expressed his thoughts on the plot build-up of Epic Games' money-making series. "For instance, Gears of War," he told Eurogamer. "It contains atrocious, offensive violations of story basics. Yet it doesn't seem to ruin it for many, many people. It's literally the worst writing in games, but seems to have no ill effects."

I couldn't agree more with Beaver. I know plenty of people who eat up the Gears series, but that doesn't take away from the fact that its storytelling is very turd-like in its design. The producer went on to say that Dead Space itself also suffered from a few issues in terms of its narrative. "Dead Space was just a simple haunted house story that we later pasted a personal aspect on top of," elaborated Beaver.

When asked what game he felt actually told a great story and did so in an effective manner, Beaver praised Portal 2. He stated that the game "succeeds at least as much on its writing as its masterful platformer level design." It certainly does, as has been evidenced by the kind words folks have bestowed upon the game over the past year.

Seriously, though, the stories in Gears? Ugh ...
